Everything you want to know about peels. |
What are Skin Peels?
A skin peel removes multiple layers of dead cells from the surface of the skin, revealing the healthy, new cells underneath. This results in a smoother, more youthful complexion. Typically, this produces much more dramatic effects, than are achievable by regular exfoliation at home. A peel could be anything from a mild glycolic with no downtime to a Co2 laser that takes 2 weeks to get over. There's a lot confusion about which peel would be right for your complexion, as there are so many different types but over the next couple of weeks, we'll tell you about all the different peels available and what they are good for. This week we are concentrating on Chemical Peels - Glycolic Peel, TCA Peel and the Multi-Mask Peel. |
What skin conditions can a peel treat?
Skin peels can be used to treat varying skin conditions such as sun damaged skin, acne, acne scarring, hyper pigmentation or lines & wrinkles. They are also good for freshening up the complexion, improving mild acne and dull tired looking skin. |
Can you explain the different types of Peel?
A Chemical Peel is chemical process whereby a layer of damaged skin is removed from the face by chemical reaction and replaced by a newer, healthier layer.
There are a number of different chemical peels that can be used to get the result... These are: |
Glycolic peel
These come in a variety of strengths from an at home peel of 5%, to a salon strength peel of 20% or 40%, on to a medical strength glycolic 70% -90% that should only be performed by a nurse or doctor.
Glycolic, which occurs naturally in sugar cane, gently dissolves the glue like substance that holds dead skin cells on to the surface of the skin so they are good for freshening up tired looking skin.

TCA peels
TCA Peel, Trichloroacetic Acid, derived from the acid that gives vinegar it's pungent smell and taste and is used to remove superficial blemishes such as post-acne scars, correct pigment problems (melasma) and smooth out fine surface wrinkles. On some occasions, TCA Peel has even been used to remove and prevent the growth of pre-cancerous lesions. It is an intermediate to deep peeling agent that is normally used in 10 to 35% concentrations.
It is a very painful peel, where the skin blanches (frosts and turns white), but for some skins works well. However, this is not recommended for dark skins. You would need to allow up to a week to recover.

Multi Mask peel
This is specifically for the treatment of pigmentation problems - particularly those experienced by some women following pregnancy - an Amelan peel uses an acid that is found in Japanese Sake and shitake mushrooms, to re-new the surface of the skin in a way that eliminates the pigment problem. It is an excellent peeling system for those skins with pigmentation problems. This is particularly useful for hormonal induced pigmentation, for example, Melasma or Chloasma and for those skins showing signs of pigmentation due to environmental or sun damage. The peel also rejuvenates the skin, helping to refine pores, clear up sebaceous secretions and soften lines and wrinkles. The skin looks clear, smooth and revitalised after this peeling process is completed and you should expect an A95percentage improvement in abnormal pigmentation with this peel.

One peel applied, it is then followed by a 28-day course using skin creams that keep suppressing the melanin. - allow a day to recover.
